Alamere Falls

April 29, 2009

I made another trip to Point Reyes but this time the destination was Alamere Falls. It is actually located in Bolinas, CA in Marin County near Point Reyes. The Alamere Falls is a nice little waterfall that falls out onto the beach. It was a super nice weekend because it was really warm and actually a little too warm. The hike is about a 8.6 mile, 4 hour hike roundtrip and it was a good hike. It was not easy at all but also not super hard. We brought our lunch and ate it at the beach and it was a nice day with no wind at all. The weekend before, I also went to Point Reyes at the Lighthouse and it was super windy.

Carrying a big bag full of camera, lens, and a tripod definitely is not fun and landscape photography is definitely not on the top of my list. Landscape and wildlife photographers deserve a lot of credit for bringing tons of equipment when they make long hikes out for those special shots.

The main Alamere waterfall seen above flows out to the beach facing the Pacific Ocean. The hike down to the beach is the hardest part of the hike as it is pretty steep, and not maintained. There are also two other waterfall sections before the big drop and those make for good shots as well. More info about the hike can be found here.

Point Reyes Meetup

lighthouse

Last weekend, I joined a group of people on a Flickr Meetup at Point Reyes. We met at the Visitor Center and apparently on weekends, you are not allowed to drive to the Lighthouse so we had to pay $5 to take a shuttle bus to get to the Lighthouse. It was very windy there and 50mph winds are normal. There is a 30 story stairway hike down to the light house which is a piece of cake going down but is quite a good cardio exercise going back up.

For the sunset, we headed over to Kehoe Beach to get some beach shots and long exposure shots. Once again, it was extremely windy at the beach and it also started to get overcast as the clouds rolled in later on. Overall, we had a good time and it was a good meetup and the organizer, Medeya did a good job.

Cactus V4 Update 1

April 9, 2009

v4 cactus transmitter

Final Update 2 since this review

original first review

So since I have received my Cactus V4, I only tested it on the day I received it. I wanted to try it out again this week but when I took it out, the transmitter was not working. So maybe it was the battery since they ship with cheap batteries. I bought a new battery, put it in, and it still didnt work. The cover for the antenna also fell off.

I contacted Gadget Infinity, and they said I can ship it back and they will send me a new unit. They will also cover for the shipping back to them. I asked if it was really necessary for me to ship it back first before they sent me a new one and they said yes. They gave me their UPS account number but I had some difficulities sending it back to Hong Kong. Since it was international, I needed a customs form and I wasn’t schedule a UPS pickup online for some reason as it didnt give me a customs form. It also required me to create a UPS account even though I was using Harvest One’s account. I had to call UPS to have them schedule a pickup and they sent me the link to create a customs form. Basically a big hassle just to send something back.

Assuming it will take about a week to send back, another week for them to test and verify, then one more week to get another unit, I will get the new unit in 3 weeks.

This is very unsatisifactory and if I had to do it over again, I would definitely just go with the AlienBee Cybersyncs. The money I save by getting these cheap triggers from Hong Kong does not really make up for the inconvenience and reliability.

We will see how reliable the Cactus V4 as I will definitely do more testing when I receive the unit again.
